  1. If you really want an unbiased, expert view, you should ask a theology professor. I have no idea what kind of assignment this concerns, so it may be a bit overkill, but if you want to learn something, this is in my opinion a very good option. Seek out the website of your nearest university or go there yourself. I'm sure that a university professor would love to help someone out for an assignment in his/her area of expertise. He might even recommend you some online articles on the subject.
  2. Wow, this is a hard assignment. Points two and four are in my opinion very valid points and I applaud your creativity in finding them. Point one, though, is something I think is untrue. The Roman paganism wasn't limited to rich men. Even though animal sacrifice was not performed by Roman women 1, there actually was a holiday for women only, the Bona Dea2. As to point three, the Church wasn't prominent until 313 AD, when the Edict of Milan proclaimed religious toleration throughout the Empire. As far as I know, before that year they were kind of an underground movement. Not smart to promote an
  3. Lacuna Coil covered Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence really well, even though I'm not a huge fan of that band. Other than that: Megadeth - Anarchy in the UK (original artist: Sex Pistols) Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust (original artist: Joan Baez) Anthrax - Got the Time (original artist: Joe Jackson)
  4. Good point. But the fallen tree is observable, whilst God isn't. That's what faith is all about, right? If a tree has fallen in a forest, but nobody has observed the fallen tree, you can't say for sure it fell, but you can believe it fell. Believing in a God I feel is quite comparable to this analogy. I have a couple of questions. I don't want to be nasty with these, I am merely interested to see how these questions are answered, as they are seemingly contrary to beliefs, yet often supported. Question number one is for anyone who believes in a benevolent, all-powerful, omniscient God. Why does
  5. Wow, there are both great posts. Both are very true. Scientifically justified post for the win! But yeah, global warming may have existed without our interference, but first of all, that is counterfactual thinking and quite useless for our current situation and secondly, we have certainly caused the strong rise of the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere through industry and transport. I honestly don't know how bad it is, but that's okay, I trust the overwhelming majority of experts on that.
  6. Interesting research, but I'm highly sceptical. There may be alternative answers to the question of faster neutron decay rates. To conclusively prove the existance of multiple universes, we'd have to be in one ourselves. But yeah, a lot of natural phenomena seem to be explained by the sheer existance of Lady Gaga, whatever she (or he/it?) may be.

  8. I'm very anti-prejudice, so I try to value people based on their behaviour towards me, not based on their belief in a higher power. But I'm guessing you won't be satisfied with this answer (I know I wouldn't) so here you go. I think that people who do follow a belief system should do that if they choose that, but they should be very careful not confuse belief with truth. You can't go and claim something is true just because the Bible says so. Having said that, I strongly oppose teaching creationism in schools (any school), because evolution has been proven correct. I think strict religious sc
  9. It'd be difficult without my friends, my beloved music, my guitar and my family.
  10. When dealing with answering questions, (for example: why did X happen?) I prefer to review and use the available evidence for either (or every, if there are more than two options) answer, the available knowledge on the topic and a critical mind as base to extend knowledge, using logical reasoning to come to conclusions. I think this method makes sense simply because it works. After all, most of our knowledge is based on this, except for mathematical laws. And yeah, it is obvious to me, and I think to many, many other atheists, that the best way is through respect and kindness for eachother. I'
  11. I myself, being an atheist, have no holy book that I adhere to, but Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist who has also written books on his own beliefs concerning the existance of God, is one of my main inspirations, philosophically speaking. There are also some people on YouTube making imo quite valid points, although YouTube does seem to be the breeding ground for trolls and flamers, both religious and atheist. As for personal truths, I don't think you've defined truth correctly: in the way that if something works, it's true. More than one thing may work in different situations, but tha
  12. I am necroing this thread, because I seem to be the first atheist that posts in this particular subforum. If anyone wishes to ask me about my beliefs or wants to know what I think of something that a religion says particularly, then fire away. Ask anything, and I really do mean anything you like.
  13. Because religion seems to me more than believing. It hides behind holy laws to in some cases keep people from the truth (think of teaching creationism in school - something I think should be prohibited) and in other cases hinders progress (I'm aiming at the Catholic Church here. Forbidding condoms, for example, would not help preventing AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa). I want people to be able to see the facts, what we know is true. I want people to use their mind. Think critically of that which you were taught and that which is imposed on to you in every day life. I think that is very important.
  14. I live in the Netherlands, which is historically and presently, a liberal country. Abortion is legal, euthanasia is legal, same-sex marriage is legal and selling soft drugs is legalized here, too. That said. I see it as a smart move. Regulations cause the quality of the product to rise through inspections, money can be made off taxes and it denies organized crime part of their income. If you force these activities underground, you may encounter problems such as dealers selling poor quality goods or forcing even small-time drugs dealers to enter the world of organized crime.

I agree with Revan that IPs could be used to uncover whoever would be behind verbal abuse. If it doesn't work out, then we can always abandon the project, right? I can imagine the need for anonymity (even more so than a username) in some cases, and I think that if it allows people to speak their mind on for example personal issues, it may help that person overcome those issues.
  16. I will, thank you very much! Wow, that's pretty epic. That kind of stuff sure is hard to play. I'm working on musical modes and improvisation using the 7 of them right now. Pretty exciting, it's a whole new dimension that you can add to your playing. I like phrygian in particular.
  17. Could you point me to that topic? I'd be interested to debate the topic further there. And yet the terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center believed in God. I doubt they were after power or money. They believed that if they killed as much heathens as possible, they would surely get rewarded by Allah and get a bunch of virgins in heaven. And weren't the Crusades organized to cleanse the holy land of the heathens (Saracens)? Even if it was power they were after, they maimed and killed in the name of their God, whose word they believe put into practice (because it's all there in the scri
  18. The OT is still as much a valid part of the bible as the NT, whether you like it or not. Yeah, I agree. There's a load of wrong stuff in the OT. That the NT is much better (although "I have not come to bring peace, but a sword" still seems rather strange to me) I also agree on. But, if you do not accept the OT, do you accept creationism? Although modern science has proved that evolution is a totally viable and fitting theory, it remains an important piece in Christian dogma. Yes, I've heard this before. And I fully agree. It should not be taken literally. But phrases like the ones I have p
  19. First and most important of all, why shouldn't I give Old Testament quotes. Is that invalid? Hell no, it isn't! Didn't Jesus say: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. - Matthew 5:17 The Old Testament is part of the bible, and I believe, of the scripture of Judaism. Why should half of the message 'not count'? Would that make creationism invalid? The exodus from Egypt? In 2 Kings followers of a different god (Baal I believe) are slaughtered by some guy whose name I forgot. It was read to me quite recently whe
  20. I disagree. The christian god supports and asks his followers to commit genocide against those of different belief systematically throughout the bible. As Judaism and Islam are not very different from Christianity, it would make sense to me if that was not different for them.
  21. Probably get together with my friends one last time and play some guitar.
