my parents spanked me as a child and I turned out fine. They didn't have to do it very often because after I learned that if I disobeyed I got punished so I only needed a verbal warning but it kept me listening to my parents and in turn kept me safe. It also (since I was disciplined from an early age) keeps be from disobeying them now. I'm a Christian and would consider myself knowledgable in the religion aspect of Christianity since I went to a Christian school throughout my primary education. Taking the phone away, maybe but detention is a little extreme. In general I agree with Flying Kiwi that the parent should notify the school or call their child during passing period. Yet for something like his dad coming home from Afghanistan is a little extreme, At my school kids are allowed to talk to their parents on their phones if for example the kid raise their hand and says my mom is calling me can I answer, then it is up to the teacher to let the kid go or request that they call her back later. I totally agree. I think our huge problem is that we don't really have enough term limits for legislature (if I remember correctly in federal legislation there is none) So our legislature is too concerned with keeping their jobs to make any tough decisions concerning the economy. In general I believe in a free market economy where the government just stays out of it. In the system there will be more highs and lows but they will fix themselves eventually. I think it is a combination of all of those things. But you cant leave out the parents. If a 12 year old dresses in a way that is too mature for them you cant forget that there is a parent behind them letting them walk out of the house like that. Also with 6 year olds swearing wether one child learned it at school or not it came from parents either swearing around their kids or watching inappropriate shows in front of their kids.
