This is horrible and all, but can someone PLEASE tell me why people still travel to places like this? It's like saying back in 1994 "Hey dear, I'm going to travel to Rwanda with the kids. What to come?" Do these people like the feeling of alertness, or do they like having to feel that at any second their lives may change forever? Do they want to feel wanted or something? It just baffles me!

Anyway, what are your thoughts on Somali Pirates?

Well it was indeed a little stupid to do that. Maybe they had too much faith.

I heard a stoy of friends that their friends got attacked my pirates on a cruise. They managed to escape. By luck I must say. They did the smartest thing in that situation that you could possibly think of. One of them took his satellite phone and just screamed. Yelling his coordinates and counted the pirates, pointed at them and just screamed in that phone. And it worked, the pirates fled. lolo. They thought he calls the Navy or w.e. It wasn't Somalia tho.

And I have mixed views about the Pirates.

Those Somalis want to be pirates because they think the gain outweighs the risk? Fine.

Then we should treat them accordingly. Use submarines for surveillance, surface, tape it when they throw weapons and ammo overboard (thus admitting they ARE pirates), then use whatever weapon seems appropiate to destroy their ship. Hundreds of miles off the coast it`s not even necessary to prevent them from jumping overboard before that happens.

Then dive again. It`s really quite simple to get rid of them.

This problem is there only because the rest of the world is quite lazy about security.

Those pirates wouldn't exist if our society wouln't be so screwed up. War isn't a solution anymore imo. Plus the NATO send their Navy out there.

Or just use Navy SEAL snipers. Somali pirates only use small single motor boats to hijack larger yachts and cargo ships and hold them for ransom. Diplomacy only can go so far... especially when western nations, such as the United States, do not negotiate with these types. Force is pretty much the only option because these pirates have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Their consequences of killing hostages aren't as great as it is for the families of those hostages or their respective nations.

Those pirates wouldn't exist if their society wasn't so screwed up. Somalia hasn't had a legitimate government since 1992 and is pretty much almost an anarchist state. They have no economy and virtually no legitimate means of making an honest buck. As far as naval protection it's not just NATO, numerous nations including China station vessels in the international waters just outside of Somalia in an effort to protect the shipping lanes. There's only so much they're allowed to do unless there's an imminent threat to their own nationals.

All this piracy (including but not limited to Somalia) is taking a toll on the global economy, not great but the damage is there.

European Nations, Russia, China and the US are trying to stop the pirates. There is a large military presence in the region. But the problem is that they are using the most sophisticated warships and weapons in the world to hunt pirates who use outboard skiffs and carry AK-47s. In essence, the militaries of the world are trying to kill a gnat with a sledgehammer. The only way to effectively stop piracy is to provide military escort for commercial ships, returning the the convoy system used in both world wars. This, however is impractical given the volume of shipping in the region. IIRC, many, many ships transit the region. And the incentive for the shipping companies to take drastic steps is actually quite low. It's cheaper to let them capture the ship and pay the ransom then it is to divert all your ships, and/or provide military escort for them. As long as the crews continue to be released unharmed (as in 99.999% of all cases) then this will probably continue indefinitely. Simply put, no one cares enough to put the resources into stopping it.
