Eating Disorders

Recommended Posts

As many of you know, I battled with Anorexia for many years and everyday is still a struggle for me. I thought it would be really awesome to set up a thread here. The goal of this thread would be to discuss, ask questions, share stories, support each others, ect. I would be happy to share my story or answer any questions you guys have. This is such an important topic to have in a health awareness forum. I have already read countless comments about wanting to lose wait. I thought it would be a great idea to spread awareness of the horrors of an eating disorder.

Discuss away! :P

First off Arie, I'd like to say that you are very brave for posting this. It takes a lot to put everything out there and I'm glad you are using your life to help/support others. I feel very lucky that I have never had an eating disorder, especially because I battle with self esteem issues every day. I mentioned it in the bullying forum, but I was made fun of a lot when I was a kid, and I have always been at least a little overweight. When I turned 15/16 I started filling out and when I did crew in senior year I lost a lot of weight but gained it back when I went to college. Today, I'm still struggling with maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising on a constant basis. I know I have a long way to go but I have full confidence that I can reach a healthy goal weight for me. I know how easy it is for people (not just girls, guys struggle with it too) to fall into unhealthy eating habits and eventually disorders. For me, it is the battle with my self esteem constantly that, in my opinion, can be just as damaging as a disorder.

On that note, I would like to say that the power of the mind is an amazing thing. We really are what we think, and I would like to ask you Arie, how did you make the decision to get better? What prompted the turning point for you? I really believe that if we think we are amazing, we are. If we think we suck, we suck. Of course it can get more complicated than that, but I think that our mindset is so important, especially for overcoming things such as eating disorders. Of course, I don't know from experience so I'd love to hear from you, Arie.

First off, that was a beautiful post! Thank you for sharing such a personal story! It makes me so sad to hear that someone as wonderful as you suffers from low self-esteem. But, I am so happy to hear that you are determined to rise above it. Too many girls just sit around and wait for someone else to fix it. We need to save ourselves! We need to be strong! You go girl!

I agree with everything you said! Plus, I make this very same point about 50 times a day lol. If more and more people started to think positively about themselves the world would truly be changed for the better. As for how I got better. Well, it was weird the whole time I was sick I sort of new in the back of my mind that this was a huge problem. I did want to get better so finally when my dad said it was time for therapy, I went willingly. That was about 2 years ago. When I became aware of how I was basically killing myself that was the final straw. You only get one life and then as well as now I am determined to make the best of it. I still struggle with the disorder. I have the little voice in the back of my head all the time, but I tell her to shut up instead of letting that voice control me. We all need to shut that voice in the back of our head up. But, as far as eating disorders go... its one of those things you struggle with forever...

Thank you so much Arie, I appreciate it :) I think we all have those little voices, in one way or another. But you're right, we only have one life and I think both of us want to be healthy and we both want to set a healthy pattern for life. Funny how that works out, no? But I think that you are very lucky that you knew what you were doing was bad for you and not a fulfilling way to live so I am very happy that you decided to get therapy! You are an absolutely beautiful girl and I think in all aspects of your life people are happy to have you around, and healthy, too. This was such a good thread Arie, I hope more people post to it :D
