This kind of thread has to be here, don't you think?

What's the Bible?

The word "Bible" comes from the Latin and Greek words meaning "book". Sixty-six different books comprise the Bible. They include books of law, historical books, books of poetry, books of prophecy, and epistles.

Who wrote the Bible?

About 40 different human authors contributed to the Bible, which was written over a period of about 1500 years. The authors were kings, fishermen, priests, government officials, farmers, shepherds, and doctors. All of them inspired by God.

The Bible is "God-breathed". The human authors wrote exactly what God wanted them to write, and the result was the perfect and holy Word of God.

What is the Book about?

Jesus is the central character in the Bible, the whole book is really about Him. The Old Testament predicts His coming and sets the stage for His entrance into the world. The New Testament describes His coming and His work to bring salvation to our sinful world.

So, if you have any doubt or you want to share something, just post it!

This needs some updating. Unless the point was too only talk about Christianity. Jews follow the old Testament, but seeing as we don't believe in Jesus... It has nothing to do with Jesus to us.

Out bible consists of three main parts: it's called Tanach. Torah- which is essentially what you guys refer to as the Old Testament. It ends with Moses's death. Navi- Prophets which starts off from the ruler after Moses and goes tile the destruction of the Temple. Catuvim- Writtings. This is sort of a jumble of things. it contains Psalms and Proverbs. Also megilla, their are a few megillas and these are used for different holidays. There is some more prophet type stuff too. Everything that is included in Cetuvim happens after the destruction of the 2nd temple.

That is the make up of our bible, but we also have tons of different commentary books and law books. But all those type of books are based of the Tanach.

also, we believe that Moses physically wrote the Torah and G-D told him what to write. After that different thingsare specifically written by different prophets.

i am not trying to offend anyone, but i personally think that if you are using the Bible for factual/scientific evidence to do with Jesus, that it would not be the a very reliable source as most of the new testament was written many years after Jesus' death, and stories could've been altered as it was passed down orally.

Have to admit, I haven't read all of the Bible - I don't think many people have. I don't regard much of it as fact, but I think that it's great to look at it from a fictional point of view. Because the time span was so large and there were so many contributers, it can probably be seen from many points of view. I also think that there are things that were omitted - such as all of the lost books like the lost book of eve and the lost book of John (not the disciple john) and so I don't really know what to trust anymore. However, it can be a great source of comfort for many, but for me, it just confuses me lol. I also think that when people follow it down to a t it can get really confusing because most of what Jesus said most likely wasn't supposed to be taken literally. He spoke in metaphors for a reason. I do love psalms though!

I'm glad that you started this topic Will. I love the Bible. People say it is God's word. And right now I'm reading the new testament. I just finished reading the four gospels about Jesus's life and now I am reading the letters that the apostle Paul wrote.

Meh kind of. There are written documents of a person named Jesus doing things that were out of the ordinary.

You could debate Him actually preforming Godly miracles or being the son of God, but He definitely did exist and he definitely was crucified.

I found this post so interesting because Judaism is actually the complete opposite in this situation. We believe that it is of upmost importance to read and really master the entire bible. I have learned it all, and numerous times at that. Plus the other two parts of our bible (that I have mentioned above). We believe that parts are metphors as well, like the world wasn't literally created in 6 days like we think of it. But, we do study it in great depth. We even include it in our prayer service.

That's really good, arie. I mean, I don't think many christians would study the Torah or the Koran. I know a little from it, and I have my favorite stories (the story of Esther is my absolute FAVORITE) but I've never read all of it. It's good to know it, I think, just to be knowledgeable about the religion but I don't really consider it a guidline for living. The commandments, yes, but honestly, I think most of the Bible was changed over many years. I'm not even really sure about Jesus - I mean, I believe that he existed, but my boyfriend was telling me that he might have just been a really powerful and influential revolutionary (just of ideas, not necessarily of religion), and so religion took him and put him in there. I don't know if that's true, of course, but it seems like it could have happened. I don't know, I just have a lot of doubt over what really happened way back when.

I believe firmly that the bible has been preserved through the time. There was a group of people, a few years after Jesus, who made sure that the Bible got preserved (they counted every single word of the Book to be sure). I'm not saying the Bible hasn't changed, there are languages differences of course, but its essence has been always the same. After all: "Heaven and earth shall pass away: but My words shall not pass away." (Mark 13:31)

Thanks! So interesting how this is an area where our religions are so opposite. From the few Muslims I do know that they personally have studied the Koran, but I have no idea if that is a universal idea or just them personally. I do love the story of Esther as well, in fact.... We have a whole holiday based on it. I recommend reading it just because it is good to have some sort of background. I even have plans to read the new testament at some point just because I hate to be ignorant. I have to disagree with you on that point, I do believe that the bible has not been changed. I do believe it is the same bible that we received at the mountain of Sinai. I don't mean this to anyone offensively at all. But seeing as I don't believe in Jesus I do agree with your latter point. I do believe that he was just an amazing leader, but not that he had any G-D like powers. Again, I do not mean this offensively, but I don't believe in him so obviously I think that. I do respect all of you who do, of course. But I do agree with Karens point here, or rather her bf's lol.

I agree. Jews also believe that this is the same bible we received all those many years ago.

Yeah, the Bible is so tricky, I really just don't know what to believe, lol. I think the hardest part for me is remembering that history is changeable and it depends on who you're talking to. So I really don't know xD
