The UK's Home Office plans to implement a new surveillance network to monitor web and email activity nationwide. It is a plan that, if implemented, will track any message sent to anyone at any time.

I do not think this is right, what happend to our privacy?

of course, if america or europe does this, it is seen as "safety" but if a arab, latin or asian nation did this, it would be seen as a "dictatorship"

they say it is neccessary to do this to catch terrorism, but lets be honest, who are they going to search more? obviously mostly muslims.

what are your opinions?

This is an interesting idea. I think it is a horrible idea, but interesting. Monitoring all these things is a complete breech of our freedom. Where are the lines? What sort of monitoring will go to far? I think this is a bad thing to start doing. I don't think it would ever happen in America. I don't think anyone would support it!

I have never heard of the site you posted the link from so I have no clue whether or not it is reliable.

The article mentions even Skype conversations would be tracked! That is insane and, I think, a complete breech of freedom.

I found it interesting Rena that you chose to single out that Muslims will be watched more closely when the article did not even mention anything about Muslims. There was one note about terrorism but it also went with crimes in general. I understand that probably is you speaking out of personal concerns, which I respect. I think that whether or not Muslims will be watched more closely, that this is a bad idea in the first place. For anyone! I am just wondering if you had read other articles that pointed out that Muslims would be tracked more or if that is just your personal opinion. If you have read other articles with that opinion can you post them? I would like to read more on that!

As a criminologist, i have to agree with this new movement. It is for the safety of us all, not just the UK but the rest of the world. Any information found in emails or the web will be used to protect us.

The way it sounds is that people will be sat in front of computers reading everything. This is not true, basically any key words used online will be picked up, and if the intelligence officer feels its a threat then action is taken. And besides if people want to read my emails they can lol very boring emails.

It will protect us, and I am all for it. For example, Intelligence officers missed the threat of the tube bombings in London 2005. Had they the ability what this will do, they could have probably seen it coming.

Plus the amount of threats the US and the UK quash on a daily basis due to intelligence finding is incredible, if we did not have the ability to survey and now go in over the internet to find threats there would be a good chance we would be a insecure nation.

It is also not a breach of human rights before someone says it, yes we have the right to privacy. But they are not invading your privacy, but the moment you say something stupid that would make you a potential war criminal for example your rights are instantly removed from you.

Thank you for clearing this point up! I was under the understanding they they literally were just going to start tacking everything because that is what Rena's post made it sound like. If the case is just that key words will sort of act as triggers that intelligence can act off of then I have no problem with this at all! I take back what I have said above lol. I really did think they were just going to start monitoring everything, which is why I questioned if this came from a reliable source. I didn't think anything like that would happen in the UK. Thanks for explaining that better Andrea! I should have asked you to begin with seeing as this is your area of expertise after all!!!

Unfortunately the media will literally make it sound like that, the article no doubt makes it sound like that. Because its interesting and shocking that way, but unfortunately it is a lot more boring than that. Plus it would cost billions to get someone to sit in front of all our boring crap on the internet. But it is a big problem we need to fix, as there is approximately around 30% of traffic online that is criminal against countries like terrorism, trafficking, drugs, cyber theft etc.

How would anyone know for sure if a message came from a muslim? How could anyone even begin to sift through all the info without having a computer looking for catchphrases?

Rena I think the US has been doing that for years with our phone convos.....

it's been happening in america, but im saying that if any other nations did it that wasnt from america or europe then everyone would be like "ohhh we must stop them!"

this website is al jazeera which is a very popular news channel/source and is reliable

no, it's just a personal opinion, but i think it's true. i remember like a month ago, on a new york campus of some school muslim students were being spied on by the government

Uhm i don't know if it will sound silly but who would be stupid enough as to email or text about any terroristic action? Especially when they know they're being watched.

exactly, al qaida and other terrorist organizations rarely use the internet

You are correct, but it happens! A lot of times they discover e-mails and such after attacks. There is a lot of stuff going around. I mean even on a smaller crime scale. This is also for regular crimes too, not just terrorism. There was a shooting at a HS near my house a while ago. After the shooting happened the authorities found a lot of messages on the boys facebook that talked about shooting. Perhaps they could have put a stop to it if they knew.

That was an interesting article, but it is only one situation. I mean we are talking about something that the whole of the UK is adopting. This is one incident that the NYPD tracked, not the whole of the US.

These sort of things don't only happen to Muslims either. I mean this could make things harder for a lot of different races, especially African Americans. Have you heard of Treyvon Martin? He is all over the news right now. He was shot by a neighborhood watch because he was "acting suspicious". There are a lot of bad things happening to a lot of different races, not just Muslims. Ever heard of the term Driving While Black? This is a popular term that many people believe. Saying that Black people tend to get pulled over a lot for ridiculous things.

That isn't true either. The US has uncovered a lot of Terrorist plots through the internet. Other countries as well. They may use the internet a lot less, that I will agree with.

Again, this is not only about terrorism though. This is about regular crimes as well and preventing those. While your point is important. I think it is also important to recognize that this could hurt more then just Muslims. Also, it is important to understand the benefits from something like this.

To be honest, I think that this is a bloody disgrace. You could go as far as saying that it contradicts Article 19 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the aforementioned article states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

If people hold extremist views, then they have the right to have those opinions, Governments cannot spy on people's every movement.

It happens, but its not just about terrorism its also about hackers being able to hack into our security systems and stealing secret intelligence too. Which they all do over the internet.

Plus criminals who are clever who tend to do this over the internet, have codes. They will write in anything, numbers, symbols, cryptic sentences - but because the government have code breakers working for them they can tell when someone is doing something naughty. Not sure how, but they can.

Under the terrorism act 2006, anybody suspected of conspiracy of terrorism can be detained for up to 90 days without any evidence found on them, only a suspicion. While that individual is detained their privacy is ripped away from them when their computer and home are searched. Just like any other criminal, every criminal is treated the same.

I want to reiterate, they will not delve deep into someones private online rights unless they have a deep suspicion of wrong doing. Therefore it cannot contradict the human rights or the convention of human rights.

It will only breach the human rights article of privacy, if for example my computer is being watched right now even though I google clothes, check my bank balance online, facebook, email to my boyfriend, etc. That would be a breach of privacy, because I am not committing a criminal offence.

I also want to point out to all, that it isnt just being used for outside threats. It is also being used for domestic crimes, like a paedophiles, child sex rings, etc. So therefore I think everyone would agree with me that it is not a breach of human rights if they are being surveyed.

Going off topic here, but when it comes to paedophiles, the so called "Justice System" is totally messed up. Last year I was sexually assaulted by a, then, 16 year old boy. I kept it secret for about 6 months and then my parents found out and we reported it to the police. They found 5 child pornography videos on his laptop hard drive, 4 of the least serious class, and one of the most serious class. In questioning he admitted to 21 separate allegations of sexual assault. This paedophile lives about a mile down the road from me, he has not been given a prison sentence.

The police in the UK are bloody useless (this is coming from a boy who has wanted to be a police officer since the age of 3), so some stupid snooping legislation isnt going to make them any better. Another thing is, the News of the World have gotten into some deep shit over this exact matter, so if they arent allowed to listen in on Milly Dowler's voicemail, then why should MI6?

EDIT: Sorry about the ranting, just pisses me off.

The security services and the police, know who they are looking for, they have a list of suspects and their associates. These are the people who they will monitor closely. They just need the legislation to carry it out. I don't think we need to worry too much, they will not be watching everybody. They neither have the time, nor the resources.

I am truly sorry to hear that, i am. The criminal justice system in the UK is a terrible system, it does not work in the slightest and I will agree with you on that one. I wish that person suffers in some way in his life for what he has done, because i know the criminal justice system wont punish him for it.

The news of the world did do wrong, because they are not allowed to snoop on people it is illegal. Even private investigators are not allowed to do what the news of the world did, but if they do they cannot use it in their reports. At the end of the day, this legislation will help people, it might not be obvious and it will not affect any of us at all. But in some way it will help.

Exactly :)
