Abu Qatada

The numerous deportation attempts by the British government of radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada are making the headlines of the UK press. Qatada is wanted in Jordan on terror charges, but until recently the European Court of Human Rights(ECHR) has rejected Westminster's bids to deport him to Jordan on the grounds that when tried, evidence obtained by torture would be used against him in court. The Jordanian government have now told the ECHR that any evidence obtained by torture will not be used against Qatada, and the ECHR are allowing Westminster to deport Qatada. Qatada and his lawyers lodged an appeal case, but there was confusion over when the date that the appeal must be lodged by. Home Secretary, Theresa May claims that the appeal was lodged a day too late, whilst other MPs and Qatada's lawyers say otherwise. This setback in the deportation process has been called an "Olympic style screw up" by one senior Liberal Democrat MP.

LOL scandal?

Well my official opinion is....get him to Jordan and be done with it....no one will remember it a month later.

My inofficial opinion....get him on a RAF plane, throw him out over the mediterrenean, and tell ppl he tried to escape with a parachute but grabbed the mechanics' backpack instead....

The reason I referred to it as a scandal is because the monumental cock up the govt have made of this is a scandal in my opinion...

He should have been deported a long time ago, he's a trouble maker, and a known terrorist supporter. ECHR can say all they want, it should be up to each individual government to say who has the right to stay in their country. Send him back to Jordan [or anywhere], Britain does not want him, let him be taken away to rot somewhere.

I am amazed that they have not simply organised for America to request his extradition as it was the American School in Jordan which he was accused of bombing in Jordan. He could then be deported to America and they could ship him anywhere they wished.

 

A simpler way of course would be for Theresa May to simply get an undertaking from Jordan that they would neither torture him, nor use any material obtained under torture against him at his trial. They have another two months (maybe even more) to present this to the ECHR before he effectively becomes a free man. They've have already wasted enough time, doing nothing.
