Four months after Damien Chazelle's critically acclaimed drama “Whiplash†won the top prize at Sundance, Miles Teller is in early talks to reteam with the writer-director on the musical “La La Land,†with “Harry Potter†star Emma Watson in talks for the female lead, multiple individuals familiar with the Lionsgate project told TheWrap.

“La La Land†is a two-hander that follows a pair of dreamers — aspiring actress Mia, who's lonely desperate to fit in, and cocky yet charismatic jazz pianist Sebastian — who fall in love in Los Angeles. However, the city that brought them together may tear them apart, as they soon discover that balancing love and art in such a cutthroat climate isn't easy.

Jordan Horowitz (“The Kids Are All Rightâ€) will produce for Gilbert Films along with Fred Berger, and Lionsgate will distribute the movie, which was packaged by WME Global. The film is also expected to find Chazelle reuniting with his go-to composer Justin Hurwitz (“Whiplashâ€).

A song-and-dance romance, “La La Land†bills itself as a movie about big dreams, the big city and the kind of love that makes life feel like a musical.

TheWrap obtained Chazelle's “lookbook†for “La La Land†— a document that helps describe the story, characters, look and tone of the film — and found the Director's Statement to be quite compelling.

“I'd like to make a contemporary musical about L.A., starting with the L.A. we know but slowly building to a vision of the city as romantic metropolis–one that is actually worthy of the dreams it inspires. I'd like to make a musical about the way L.A.'s peculiar rhythms can push its residents to the edge of their emotions–be they hope, desperation or love. Think the kind of teetering-toward-madness you see in “The Graduate†or “Boogie Nightsâ€, and imagine if you were to push that further. In this case, the city pushes its residents all the way: it pushes them into song.

The characters of this movie are just people trying to make it. One thing most movies about struggling L.A. actors and musicians miss is the poetry of their struggle: these are blue-collar folks working day in and day out to make something happen. What I'm interested in is pitting their yearnings and their ambitions against the musical genre. After all, musicals are all about the push-and-pull between reality and fantasy; the heroes of this film, because of their big dreams, are constantly poised on that edge.

At its core, this is a movie about artists in love–and what it means to be an artist in love in arguably the most competitive city on the planet. How do you juggle the need to find success as an artist with the need to share oneself with another human being? And how do you do so in a place where every poster, every street corner and every sign remind you of the glories just beyond reach? L.A. is the “Dream Factoryâ€, and to me there's something swooningly romantic about that: all those unsung songs and unrealized ideas clouding the air. By casting an affectionate eye on a pair of young hopefuls, while aspiring to the kind of full-fledged romanticism you hardly ever see in today's movies, I hope to capture the spirit of the city I now call home, and make a movie that feels both classical and urgent–and, yes, intrinsically L.A.â€

Still early in the process, but the source here is solid.

With Teller's schedule so busy, they say production wouldn't be able to begin until Feb. 2015, so this would be a long way out.

ALOT of English people SOUND American while they sing so it's not that freaking hard.

take LEONA LEWIS's talking voice vs. singing voice. Obviously Emma needs to work with a dialect coach(like Dan did) for her american roles, but she's talented and can do it, this would be amazing for her. and you're right, if I am Romanian and can sound American when I speak English, then Emma W to the a to the t to the....can do it too.

Emma would have to SING in an AMERICAN ACCENT in this movie. Find the errors in this sentence.

1. All the letters in the word "sing" should be lower case.

2. With the exception of the initial A, all the letters in the word "American" should be lower case.

3. All the letters in the word "accent" should be lower case.

Roberto, I know. But I mean, she auditioned for Les Mis, for example. Well, I do not say that any of those actors (Heatherway, Crowe...) are SINGER in the artistic sence, but even there she could never compete...... Maybe Emma has a nice voice, but I do not think that she has the singing range to carry a musical through 90 minutes. She would either be dubbed or her voice would be manipulated by computer, what makes her not genuine and a fake. To sing artisticly needs years of training and education. Why, for heavens sake, is she not able to do a good english comedy. She is always linked to the wrong stuff. She is so funny in non-staged interviews so I think she could carry a comedy easily.

Not everyone wants to just do what is expected of them.

I see nothing wrong with an actor who has ambitions beyond their current abilities.

Every great actor was once an amateur.

Regression ends filming in a few days, after which her schedule is free.

This wouldn't go into production until at least February. That would allow her a decent amount of time to prepare, be it through lessons or whatever.

Well she obviously can sing if she got the part, correct?

No. It is wide common in Hollywood to use a actor/actress and get the voice dubbed by a professional singer, or, much more worse, the voice is electronically maintained. And believe me, I know some professional singers; this is nothing what you learn between parties, shopping-sprees and caribbean holidays with bf. It is a 3-4 year hard and demanding study. As I said, she might have a nice singing voice (for under the shower or at private functions) but I hardly doubt that she can carry that movie with her singing. She is unfortunatly no second Judy Garland.

Agree; but I do not think that she is taking singing lessons.

She did take voice lessons at BROWN. I never want emma to be a second judy garland, nobody can be that. nobody can replicate someone else.

Every job on this planet requires effort, I'm a graphic designer and I see the difficulties that come with projects, but with my natural abilities, and online tutorials I make it happen and learn new skills and techniques, she'll do the same. While I don't need a person to show me how to's Emma knows she needs a vocal coach etc. She can do it. She's no afraid of a GOOD challenge.

Do you not realise the difference between voice lessons (for reading, for acting on stage, even for movies) and SINGING lessons? And how could she take "voice lessons" at Brown? She did the most of her studies ONLINE, so please do not tell me she did online voice lessons.

we don't know that yet, they're in talks which to me it means they contacted her with an offer.

so before you didn't believe she attended, now you state that she took online classes? okay. Hermione went on campus like eevrybody else coz she cared about it, and wanted to have that experience. we, me and you do not know her schedules, yes i know, but I didn't ask her if she took singing lessons along with that. i will ask her next time I see her. if she ever took singing lessons, I'll ask her but after girl talk.

???? Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson, the Paris-born actress, did 75% of her studies for her degree in English literature ONLINE, means she handed her papers in via e-mail. She even twittered about. So, please tell me, how it is possible that she took "voice-lessons" at Brown University without beeing physically present there. She was last seen there 2 1/2 years ago (not counting her graduation-pr-stunt). My comment and my opinion has nothing to do with the fictional character of a girl namend Hermione Granger, out of a series of books written by J.K. Rowling. Got it?

Coz she has said it in an interview, that's how I know, and she prolly did it in that rest of 25%. How do you know it's precisely 75%? You must be on her PR TEAM and you just check on the fandom. Her graduation wasn't a stunt, she had to go pick up her BA. But it has a lot to do with personal stuff, coz one thing is to be objective and another to be hateful on a person much younger. Pff.

Look back on all your posts since you first signed up. What was the reason you signed up on here? Did Emma ask you to survey us? I call her Hermione by personal choice.

I'm not crazy about musicals but I think this would be great. I can see Emma pulling this off. Also I think Emma actually has an extensive music background if you take these examples into account.. Ex. (1) Her cute dance routine with Jimmy Fallon...link:

    (2) Her music video with former boyfriend George Craig "Say You Don't Want It"....link:
       (3) Singing background for Ben Hammersley "Pantomime"....link:
   (4) Not confirmed but I'm 99% sure this is her also singing background with Ben Hammersley in "Stairwell Wall"...link:

You said it right, she is singing BACKGROUND. This is definitly different to solo-singing or singing a song or aria as main artist. Her dancing skills: all we ever saw was the routine she did with Fallon and the one with MIller in Perks (the same movements, btw), not counting her little hop on-hop off at the pole and the disco-"dance" in BliRi. A nice little zippel-zappel, but far away from a dance routine for a musical (if there is any dance routine in it). What I want to say is that she TRIED to do this things on a very low basis but we still have no proof that she can really DO it as a lead character in a musical.

What was the reason you signed up on here?

The reason was in the first place that I thought to find people here who see her how she really is - a human beeing with much range to improve, but also with mistakes and errors. She is NOT 100% perfect and she is NOT able to do each and everything without any training or without making mistakes.
