2018 And 2022 World Cups

Recommended Posts

Will be hosted in Russia and Qatar respectively.

I am absolutely gutted to see England lose out to Russia to host the 2018 World Cup. It's been a long time since 1966 and I wasn't around to see that one, the chance to see and enjoy World Cup on home turf is something which is only going to remain a distant dream for now.

Well done to Russia and Qatar though, it is always good to see nations hosting a World Cup for the first time.

I don't know what Russia has planned, but Qatar will be building some pretty impressive stadiums.....

Im so upset about it...England had by far THE best presentation...David Cameron and the Prince were there, yet Russia's MAIN man didnt turn up and they got it.

Qatar loooks beautiful. Its definitely going to be a different perspective..being held in the Middle east. Lets hope its good. Controversies being caused already due to apparently the ban of alcohol, and gays?

I just can't see the Russia world cup being that great. The distance between stadiums is just huge. Would rather have seen it go to Spain to be honest.

I think we're just spoiled over here, what with inventing the sport and having the worlds most popular league etc :/

I was at work so I haven't seen any of the presentations but I have heard that England's was supposed to be pretty impressive.

Qatar will certainly be a culture shock and different to any other World Cup, they have some pretty strict laws there which I can imagine won't be too popular with the travelling supporters. I think they may relax the laws for the tournament.

Yeah, if not England I would have rather Spain/Portugal or Holland/Belgium have got it. Russia is so vast and spans nine time zones, kick off times are going to be all over the place!

If I heard correctly, it won't be accross "all" of Russia. It won't go further towards east than the Caspian/Black Sea.

As for the other EU candidates: England made a fair candidate, but NO for Netherlands/Belgium (I'm Belgian). The country is politically unstable as hell (I'm not sure if they'll be any Belgium in 8 years from now). Spain/Portugal: economically unstable ...

Congrats, the smallest country ever to host a World Cup, a great acheivement and some exciting times ahead, I am looking forward to 2022.

That would be much better and would make more sense...

I read when reading about Englands bid that venues had to stretch across the whole country, for example if England had been accepted, Plymouth in far south west would have been a host city, although it's easy for us as we are small. However for Russia, I am guessing as the country is so vast, it would have been impossible so they made some exceptions.

thats we get for sending a super model to present a bid for World Cup...

I don't think it would have really made much of a difference to be honest..

Afterall, we sent Royalty... our FA President and future King - Prince William, our Prime Minister David Cameron and David Beckham, you can't really get much more high profile than that, yet we only had 2 votes (allegedly though as a direct result of the British media).

I would have loved Australia to have got 2022.

Yep, if England got it they had plans to do up Elland Road. It's pretty shabby now, could do with a lick of paint.

at least you got Dave Beckham.. he's a footballer, we didnt use no footballer on the bid thingie.. we got a kangaroo stole the trophy, Croc Dundee, PM of Oz, Ian Thorpe, and 2 minutes of football.. it's more a tourism ad than a World Cup bid

These selections are so blatantly political it's funny. Qatar especially looks like a disaster waiting to happen. Instead of looking at which country had the best infrastructure and logistical set up to handle an event this big. FIFA decides to take a shot at US and British policies. They can talk all they want about spreading the game. But that's a load of BS. It's window dressing to hide the true intentions of certain members.

Russia should be okay. But I worry about the long term effect on their economy hosting both the Olympics and World Cup within 4 years of each other. No country has come even close to breaking even hosting the Olympics in over 20 years.

Qatar may have money and infrastructure. However, it will be over 120 degrees (49 degrees Celsius) in the summer a lot of days. You're in one of the most volatile regions of the world. And even though Qatar itself doesn't have any issues, they also can't logistically provide the security needed. And it will be very difficult to be financially successful. There were over 50,000 US citizens who traveled to South Africa. The largest non-African contingent of fans. Even though a lot of them couldn't get tickets to games. They provided hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economies. Not that many will travel to Qatar. In fact, in less a lot changes in the next 11 years, the state department will probably advise against US citizens going. Especially as relations with Saudi Arabia slowly erode.

We may not matter in the outcome of the tournament. But the US has a lot to do with how financially successful these types of events are. We travel well, and we spend money.

how can you know that Qatar cant Provide the security needed? have u ever come to Qatar or hear anything about it?,and when u compare Qatar of South-Africa everyone know that South-Africa is not rich as Qatar so there is no compare between those two! and if the the state department advise against US citizens going they can do what they want but i dont think everyone will agree with that cuz it's FOOTBALL event, the relation with Saudi Arabia?? u people are coming to Qatar not Saudi Arabia and im sure there going to be more peace when it's come to football it's can control everything!

and u said not all american can come here and even if the world cup happened in US not all the fans here in midle east can go there!!!but in the end the fifa chose Qatar and nothing will change that =D with all respect to others ^^

I don't think that anybody can deny that England, along with the US could put on some of the best World Cups. England already has everything in place, we could host a World Cup tomorrow and it is widely reported that our presentation was one of the best so I think that the fact that we only got two votes makes a complete mockery of the voting system.

There have been many accusations and claims thrown at FIFA over the past week, call it corruption or whatever you will but I think that something has definitely gone on and I expect a lot more to come out over the next few months. If these accusations, true or not, were made against a government or a large company there would have been a public enquiry but not with FIFA, they consider themselves to be above the law and are reported to have an agreement with the Swiss government to be exempt from Swiss corrupion laws - that alone speaks volumes on what FIFA is all about.

Good luck to Russia, although I would have preffered Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium ahead of them. With the mafia and racism still a big issue in Russia, they have a lot of work to do. I think that they have just as big of a job, if not bigger than South Africa had. A lot of people had doubts about South Africa and while the standard of football could have been higher, I think they were pretty good hosts.

I always wanted and thought that Australia would get 2022, a sporting country with a good tradition of holding successful big sporting events, but have never hosted a World Cup. I thought it should have been their turn.

However, I don't really mind Qatar too much, they are way ahead of a lot of other Middle Eastern countries and I don't think they will have problems attracting supporters and tourists. Dubai has become quite popular with western tourists and I don't think Qatar is too far behind. I think that they are in a better position than South Africa were as hosts. My main concern with Qatar has always been the heat, there has been talk of holding it in the winter but I can't see that working as it would distrupt domestic seasons too much, particually in Europe, it will be interesting to see what might be done to combat the heat.

Qatar has a population of 1.7 million. I read somewhere that 400,000 people descended on South Africa this summer. It's going to be interesting how it is handled. I have no doubt though that Qatar can be prepared, as it is 12 years away.

But yes, I'd have loved to see it go to England. Imagine walking down Wembley way for an England Germany final....

It would have been amazing, although tickets would have been gold dust. But even if you can't get to games, just to experience it, the carnival atmosphere, the fan zones etc. I went to Switzerland for Euro 2008 and had the time of my life, I would love to live that experience again back home.

I'm not saying Qatar is not a great country. And they have plenty of money. But they don't have manpower. It's a country roughly the same size as the Indianapolis metro area, where I live. And that's not a major metro area by any means. South Africa has 75,000 active military personnel. Qatar has around 10,000. I realize that the U.S. has a few thousand troops in Qatar. But I can guarantee U.S. citizens won't be happy with having to foot the bill to help provide security. It could all be a moot point. There is a very good possibility that nothing will go wrong. I'm just saying I'm not sure Qatar has the manpower to respond effectively if it does.

And that still doesn't fix what will definitely be a problem. The heat. I don't care what type of cooling systems they put in place. At those temperatures, in an open air stadium, it will as effective as trying to stop a cruise missile with a fly swatter. Especially on the field. Players, and fans, are going to face serious health risks. They could move it to winter. But as someone else already pointed out, that royally messes up the professional seasons. Most of the clubs will throw a fit if they do that.
