  1. So glad I found this forum/thread. My friends and I are planning to go to the premiere and I'd like to ask a few questions if that's ok. Firstly, we are hoping to get to Trafalgar Square around midday on the 6th, do you think this is early enough? Secondly, to the people also attending, are you going to Trafalgar Square or Leicester square or both? This is our first Harry Potter premiere and we're all a bit clueless. Also,I take it that other people will be staying over night at Trafalgar square?

Midday will be easily enough, and if I go, I'll just go to trafalgar square. I don't think many will be allowed to Leicester square, due to all the development there.

If I do go I won't be there until around 8am on the 7th, hope thats early enough :/.

  2. I'd love to visit the Scandinavian countries. Then I'd go to Thailand and visit Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos (I've already been to Vietnam and Thailand, but not the other 2), and I'd love to visit the Cook islands in the south Pacific. Basically I just want to go to different places.

  3. I think it's hard to tell at this stage. Mobile phones just haven't been around long enough for us to have any conclusive evidence that they are harmful, and conflicting reports are being released by the media all the time. I personally believe that it's unlikely. Even if we lived in a world without mobile phones and wifi, we'd still be constantly exposed to natural radiation from all around. Unless we get more research on the matter that proves they are harmful, I'll be unlikely to change my usage habits.

  4. Well you can't talk about travel writing without mentioning Bill Bryson. He is absolutely brilliant, and his books genuinely make me laugh. He has several books about various countries and continents, and while they are from the earl nineties, they are still relevant today. Basically the premise of each book that I've read of his is that he goes around the loads of cities, towns and villages, commenting about what he sees and throwing in witty anecdotes here and there. I can't really do him justice, you'll just have to pick up one of his books. They are utterly brilliant.

  5. If I say "Damn...why did they hold back the PanzerDivisions for days...?", that will get me in trouble, won't it?

You should change that to 'thankfully they held back the PanzerDivisions for days', then you don't need to worry about getting into trouble.

I have no idea why the high command held back Rommel's units. If he had his way and actually went to northern France, it would've been an onslaught.

There was a documentary on the BBC the other day about it, what I got from it was that Hitler was so far up his own a**e that he thought whatever he said was right. He didn't give Rommel the freedom he needed on the battlefield, which perhaps in hindsight contributed to Rommel's involvement in the 20 July plot against Hitler. The only major advantage the allies had when entering France was almost total control of the air, which probably was the deciding factor. Whenever the Nazis sent messages to each other about plans etc, they often revealed important locations of troops, tanks and the like, and these messages were intercepted and decoded at Bletchley Park, which led to the allies bombing the hell out of said locations.

  6. if you're intersted in history you could go to the famous WW1 battlefields at Ypres...

I'd definitely agree with this, I went there on a school trip a few years ago. There's so much to see, and seeing the graveyards is certainly a chilling experience, but something I feel everyone should do. Ypres itself is a very nice town, hard to believe that it was complete ruins 90 years ago.

I would also go to Brussels as well, and try some of the chocolate they have there!

  7. Regarding gifts, no you can't bring the Eiffel tower home! But when I was there a few years back I remember there being lots of people selling miniature models of the Eiffel tower for only a few euros, which were quite novel. Paris is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world, you won't have trouble finding gifts for people!

  8. Hey mates!How are you?

I post this topic here, because there seems to be alotta people from the countries mentioned below or have been to there. If this is the wrong place to post this, please transfer or delete it.It's just okay, thank you.

I'm going to visit Europe in the coming July as an exchange student. The major routine is Paris→Lyon→Provence→Swizerland(havent known the precise destination till now)→Barcelona→Madrid.Despite the time spent in class,I still have a lot of leisure time to wander around.

About my detail info.My native language is Chinese, and I can speak fluent english and a little German. But I cant speak a single word of French and Spanish. It's not easy to pick up them within a month, isnt it?

Besides,it's my first time to come to Europe. The whole travel will take 3 weeks.Almost two weeks in France,1 day in Switzerland and the rest in Spain.

    So,in a word,my major questions are:

1.What typical tourist attractions should I visit?

2.I wanna bring some gifts back for my family and friends, but I dont have a large budget. So i need some advice.

3.what should i get prepared before the depature from Shanghai?(ie:finance, culture, language etc.)The departure is probably on 10th July

4.I wanna mail some postcards to my friends when in France.Does Eiffle Tower or do any other tourist spots provide such service? What about the fee?

I will value every reply.Thank you so much!!!!

    Mia

If I was you, I'd pick up a book with a few common French phrases and learn them. Just a few tourist phrases. The majority of people in Paris will speak some English, but beware that you should at least make the effort to speak to them in French first. They are very proud of their language and it's not unheard of to speak to a French person in English and they' just walk off and ignore you. I'm niot so sure about Spanish, just do the same and pick up a few common phrases. You shouldn't really have any problems in Madrid or Barcelona.

If I was you I'd visit the obvious places like the Eiffel tower, arc de triomphe etc, but also go to the louvre if you can. Generally all European cities have lots of cultural sites, if that's what you're interested in, ie churches, palaces and the like.

They'll be lots of places to send post cards from near the Eiffel tower. If you ask the person selling the postcards, they'll almost certainly speak English and wil direct you to somewhere you can send them.

Before you leave just make sure you've got plenty of euros, 1 currency for all these countries makes it quite easy. I'm not sure what visa requirements you'll need from whe you live but make sure you've got that all sorted before you go! You'll have a brilliant timel, it's just a shame you couldn't come to London as well!

  9. woah, that is weird..we were at the back on the way, stench of urine, great! the bus was delayed cuz the driver didnt like his seat on our bus due in at 8pm...

Yeah, I mean the megabus is cheap, it's not too bad if you sit away from the toilet and can get to sleep. But I was nursing a massive hangover and had to sit on it for 5 hours all the way back up to Leeds...next time I'll get the train!

  10. my day:

    7am: wake up/shower etc

8am: drive to swindon to catch Megabus to London, Victoria

11am: get off bus at Victoria Coach Station

    then walk to Victoria Tube

catch tube to westminster then to Wembley Park

    eat lunch

    watch play-off final at Wembley

go to bus station, bus delayed by 1.5 hrs

11:30pm: get back to swindon, drive home

    12am: get home

That is weird, at 11am yesterday I was just getting on a bus at Victoria coach station. And yes, it was a megabus, not the nicest form of transport it has to be said! Small world eh....

  11. I think for me, modern warfare will always be the best. The maps were brilliant, the campaign as well. "All Gillied up", the mission that takes place at Chernobyl, is probably my favourite mission of any game I've ever played. And I still play multiplayer even now, 4 years after it came out. I just love hearing those familiar words, "50,000 people used to live here, now it's a ghost town".

I do worry what will become of MW3. With the main guys from infinity ward gone, I hope it doesn't lose what made MW1 and MW2 great.

  12. I have been to the one in Anaheim and the one in Paris. They were both equally good, although space mountain in Paris is quite a lot better. I'd really like to go to the one in Florida as the general consensus seems to be that that one is the best. Eventually I'll do all the Florida theme parks, universal etc.

But yep Disneyland is very good. I love the ride where you get to drive a car along a guided rail. Makes me feel like a 4 year old all over again.

  13. Ikr?! Whats your favorite app so far?

I think that moving cover wasnt a sepperate app. Every magazine has their own app, I don't remember what magazine it was though.

Hmmm best apps. I like the BBC iplayer app and planetary. I need to find more though! What about you?

Got one. For a month or so I think...I absolutely love it. I use it for all kinds of things. Really one of the best gadgets (together with my iPhone) I bought the last couple of years.

I feel like I can't go back to using a laptop, unless I have to. It coated a lot of money, but to me, it was worth it.

  14. The Dude can't leave! This is almost as bad as when Dumbledore died!

In all seriousness, best of luck with whatever you're doing in the future.

  15. Is there a good place to get info for the premiere, i.e start and end time, what to expect etc? I'm on a shoestring at the moment until I can get some student loan through later this year so i'll take my own food. I'm just a bit hesitant about the camping part. There's no chance I'm taking a tent, if I do sleep it'll end up being under an umbrella or something. But if it's not necessary, and I can arrive maybe 9am then I'll do that. Of course, trafalgar square is massive so they'll be lots of room, but I just hope when Emma arrives she goes around everyone hah. Would hate to miss out.

  16. Out of things to take away, I spend money on things I can't get at home, which is the local food mostly.

I would agree with this, get something that you can't get at home. Food or some drink, something that you can share with other people when you're back home.
