  1. She's really started jetting around the globe since she started at Brown, hasn't she? Back and forth between London and various places in the USA, with a visit in Bangladesh in between. I wonder where she is now, London or back at Brown?

  2. While I do not like the fact that there won't be any more films, my obsession with the series was more about the books. I first read Philosopher's Stone in 1999, shortly after it had been published in Germany when the frenzy wasn't nearly as big as it is today. A friend of my parents had told my mother about this great book she had to read... I was 12 back then. When it was being discussed in the media that there would be films I didn't want to watch them at first, because I feared they would ruin the story. I ended up watching the first film five times in the cinema (I still have the tickets for proof :P).

When the final book was being published, I felt torn: While I didn't like the fact that there wouldn't be any more books, I was also glad that we would finally know the ending. I guess I'll feel the same in July this year.

I can't even beginn to tell how much Harry Potter influenced my life. My thirst to read the books in the original publishing language made me want to get better in English, and I did that. I started as one of the worst students in my English class and ended up gaining top marks in achievement class. I also took the language as my main subject in my Abitur (A-levels). Because of this I didn't have any problems to get into my dream subject at my current university - they had good knowledge of English as a requirement for all applicants, and a way to prove them were the school certificates. I'm sure my life would be different in some way if it hadn't been for Jo Rowling and her books.

I'll always rememer the series as a wonderful part of my youth, and no new series that might come up will change that.

  3. Same here. At least I got home to my parents on the 22nd, we have lots of great food prepared and will have a very nice, quite christmas among the three of us. We were going to have my grandmother and greataunt over tomorrow, but that was cancelled. The weather conditions are so bad that it would be too dangerous to pick them up. We might leave the house tomoorow for a walk in the snow, but that's about it.

  4. I would have gotten several pieces of the line, but the postage fee kept em from it. I guess paying it on top of the regular price of the products would have been okay, but when ordering clothes or shoes online I often return them because they don't fit. Getting it shipped from England, returning it and possibly ordering again - the postage would easily be more expensive than the products received.

  5. That bad up north? As far as I can remember I haven't seen something like that when I still lived in Hamburg. And I hear from friends that Berlin is covered in snow as well. Must be pretty bad. I'm glad I'm in southern Arziona right now. :P

I'd join you in Arizona right away if I could.

I found an article with some pictures, if you know Hamburg, you might be interested in them:

    Spiegel

  6. ROFL - I just checked the weather report online and they have a prognosis about snow at christmas. Rough translation: "According to new calculations the chances for a white christmas are bad in the south and west. It's likely not to happen."

Honestly, accidents everywhere, transport breaking down, and they are sad about this white stuff finally melting.

  7. This and the past winter have been the worst I've ever known. I know it was really bad in 1947 and 1978/79 in Germany, but those are the tales of my parents and grandparents. I guess I'll be telling my future offsprings about the winter in 2009/10...

Schleswig-Holstein (the federal state that is furthest north in Germany) could just as well be Bavaria (where the Alps are) at the moment. Snow and ice are everywhere. On Thursday school was cancelled in the whole region, which is rare (the universities stayed open - grrr :)). First there was rain, than it snowed, an at night the temperatures fell to -10°C. The result: A firm layer of solid ice covering EVERYTHING. The snow ploughs aren't able to break it, and salt won't work because of the low temperatures. I walked downtown yesterday to run some errands and (during a 20 minute walk) witnessed four cars going off-road or not moving at all and one woman falling (thankfully no casulties). There are few planes leaving Frankfurt airport, because so many other airports around the globe are closed down due to the snow. A train got stuck the other day because of energy systems failing, and in general you shouldn't bet on trains being on time (or even being close to the schedule). I just hope I will get home to my parents safely for christmas.

  8. I firmly believe there is some good potential in every human. But there are people who have lost it at some point in their lives, some earlier, some later. I think this is what happened to Voldemort and Bellatrix. Both of them show signs of derangement, and I wonder what happened to them, because there must have been some influence from the outside. They can't have been born this way. I think in HBP we get a slim insight in what happened to Tom Riddle. He experienced a lot of bad stuff during his childhood and I think this is what turned him bad in the end. In the OOTP film version Harry tells Voldemort that he pities him, because he doesn't know love or frindship. I think there is a lot of truth in these words. No matter how much bad stuff someone brings into this world, I think there was always the chance of a completely different life for them at some point.

  9. Emma has just tweeted about the snow...

"The snow is pretty but am I going to be able to get out tonight??!"

Everywhere has been hit pretty bad today, especially in the south.

In the north of Germany nothing works anymore. In my town there was a notice by the local police station yesterday at noon, advising people not to drive and not to rely on public transport either - pure ice everywhere, neither the snow ploughs nor salt would work anymore! Some of the motorways are closed at times and trains are delayed or cancelled. I like snow as long as it falls, stays, and looks pretty for weeks, but not when it won't stop falling day after day.

  10. I was just going to open a topic like this myself!

Just came back home from the cinema and I have to say that I LOVE this film. I'd go as far and say it's the best one yet. I was a little concerned about it before because the book is so dark, which made me think that the film might be depressing, but it isn't. You do realise how bad their situation is, but there are always light moments that show hope - without becoming ridiculous (I thought some of the scenes in HBP were, especially the stuff with Lavender Brown).

The ending of the film had people going NO!!!!!. It's excruciating to have it end at this point! No my personal countdown for part 2 will start ;).

    - - -

Another thing: In the beginning of the film the cinema had some huge technical difficulties that were quite funny when solved.

Before the actual film there were 25 minutes of advertising and trailers. All of the trailers were shown TWICE, which didn't go well with an audience waiting for Harry Potter on the day of release, I can tell you that! During this time, the lights wouldn't go down, but I guess many people thought that was to give people with last minute icecream purchases a chance to get back to their seats safely.

Finally, the WB-logo appeared in this special way they always create it for Harry Potter-films (otherwise one might have thought it was another trailer). But the room was still brightly lit. People started complaining and waving up to where the machines are. Then, the first shot (SPOILER Rufus Scrimgour, as you have seen in the trailer, telling people "these are dark times, there is no denying") came up - without sound! At this point, a boy had rushed out to tell the people from the staff something was wrong, and the film froze. We had a still of the ministers face, from the eyebrows to the chin, looking disgruntled at us for three minutes, halve of the audience had fits of giggling about that.

Someone from the staff entered the room and asked the audience if the lights just went on on their own after the commercials. He had about 200 people shouting "they never went out" at him. Answer: "Super", in a really sarcastic way.

The screen went black, the lights went out, and when they started the showing again, we saw several film company logos within seconds, because they were going through the trailers fast. When Harry Potter finally started, there was a huge round of applause.

Just thought this story might amuse you!

  11. I guess the fact that we now have (working) livestreams of the premieres is another thing that keeps people from posting about the premiere here. I remember how these forums would break down under all the access. People would fill pages and pages with comments like "I wonder what she's wearing", "I keep refreshing Getty, but STILL no pics" and stuff. This was the first premiere of wich I watched the full livestream, and after more than two hours of coverage I was ready to call it a day without discussing it.

I also think that in the past years we were being spoiled with new pics and facts about Emma. In 2003 the premieres were the only times there actually WAS something to discuss, but now she is attenting all those events. It sometimes feels like a long time since we got something new, but that's only because we got used to it. There used to be times without any news for six month.

  12. I'm not a citizen of the USA, so the elections aren't exactly on top of my priority list (in contrast to the excitement about HP). But since I'm interested in politics, I'm going to follow the news about it.

Maybe they should consider opening voting offices in the multiplexes, this would surely give them a higher percentage of attendance. :P

  13. I'll be in the cinema on wednesday next week (when it will be released in Germany :P). But as things are at the moment, I'll go there alone. Can you believe it: There are 21 people in my class at university, and NONE of them is interested in seeing the film at all. Most havn't even read the books or seen any of the Harry Potter-films (let alone having seen them in cinema). Depressing. Anybody else who has to suffer this at the moment? I need some support here!

  14. I know quite a few people who havn't read the books and/or watched the films. I just started at a new university three weeks ago where I didn't know anybody and I'm still trying to find someone who will join me in seeing Deathly Hallows, because nobody really cares about it here (or at least I havn't found the persons who do). Unless you watched the films and cared enough about them to research who the actors and actresses are you wouldn't know Emma. Yes, she has been in several fashion magazines, but how many people do you know who actually read them (especially if they are male)? Emma has successfully avoided the gossip columnes all those years, while other people were in them on an almost daily basis, so that's another "you wouldn't know her".

I think it is very believable that she met someone who had never heard about her or Harry Potter before. Well, maybe he DID see a poster before, seen the books in an store or had even caught a glimpse of a trailer on TV, but be honest: How many franchises are there YOU never took interest in? Would you recognize their stars if you met them?

What I do think is that the people Emma became friends with will have watched a trailer or a film with her in it when they got the chance afterwards, after all, people are interested in what their friends are doing. I'm friends with people who have written books and have been in films, and when they have a new project coming up I do watch/read it when I get the chance. It's also a form of support.
