There seems to be a 5 min time limit on the ability to edit a post

why any time limit atall ?

you could go into admin and take off this petty restriction.

Because we don't want people to edit their posts to make it look like they said something else after someone replied to them or to "delete" whole posts because they changed their opinion or didn't get the reaction they want making people who replied look like fools/trolls etc. The five minutes gives people time to correct any spelling or grammar error's or to add/delete something if they want.
