My boyfriend is a computer geek and recons the magnets in my screen have gone. I'm not 100% sure though. I haven't had this laptop long. It's the second replacement i've had now. It's because i'm always on them. I got this laptop last year. It's a Compaq. My screen has gone rather weird. I have to have it all the way open for my screen to work. If I have it a fraction closed the screen goes black and don't work. I know about sleep mode and all the stuff about lowering your laptop screen turns the screen off. Me and my boyfriend changed settings and still it's the same. I have it ALL the way open. It's that bad, a slight movement from me and it flashes back as though I touched the screen. I am sending it off to be repaired again and it has some other problems with it that i'll most likely end up with anouther replacement. For example my battery is gone too, It don't work unless it's chargeing. It's because I excessivley use it. I posted here to wonder if anyone could help me find out or knows what is up with my screen? Link to post Share on other sites
Michael Posted January 6, 2011 Share Posted January 6, 2011 It's sounds to me like the laptop display has got a bad contact, it "thinks" when you move the display that you have closed it and turns it off. The bad contact could happen for example if the laptop falls down, or it can also be an manufacturing failure. There is nothing you can do to get this fixed, only Compaq can repair it. ckravitz Posted January 6, 2011 Share Posted January 6, 2011 (edited) I'm not familiar with how Compaq designs their computers, but I would assume that either the screen is bad, or the wire that connects the screen to the processor, hard drive, etc is loose or cut. The wire idea seems plausible since if it is damaged, it makes sense that it would only work at a certain elevation. At the other positions, wires that need to touch may not be touching. Again, I'm not familiar with Compaq, but this is what I believe if I had to bet on it. -----EDIT----- What Michael is saying is possible, but I would think that shutting off sleep mode (etc) would fix the problem. If that is actually the case, than it could be the sensor that he was talking about, or even your proximity sensor (if it has one). Antares Posted January 10, 2011 Share Posted January 10, 2011 About the screen: Yes, that's a hardware failure of some sort, possibly the connection between the screen and the mainboard/graphics adapter. Sending it in for repair is definitely the best solution if you're still on warranty. Laptop displays don't contain any magnets, by the way, these are only in non-flat cathode ray tube monitors. About the battery: It's not uncommon for batteries to die after several months. That's usually considered normal wear and not covered by warranty after six months. If your laptop's older than six months, you might have to pay for a replacement. Link to post Share on other sites
