  1. If we're talking about the "squeaky clean" image, I'm sure this is partly how Emma really was, and still is. It's just not the whole truth. You're onto a false dichotomy though: that you can either try to control your public image, or be truthful. In reality, it can be both. Everyone is trying to be perceived in a certain light, or IOW, "controlling" their "public image". In the past, Emma has willingly cast herself as the nerd, which certainly was how she saw herself to some extent. Shy and boring. But certainly, a confident person like Emma is also always aware of her strengths.
  2. lolwut? What I said was that Emma has reinforced the "squeaky clean" image, the image of being studious, of being "shy and boring" (<- that's a quote). This was succesful in becoming the point of view of the public, so she does have some control over it. If this is truly who she is, welp, it's so one-dimensional that no human being is only that, I'd say. If you want to call that "tricking" people, that's your personal preference. Emma certainly isn't more or less "guilty" of this than anyone else is.
  3. I repeat myself, because she has done so in the past, she is continuing to do so, and she is quite succesful at it. There's a reason why all newsbits about Perks and Bling Ring made allusions to some "good girl gone bad" stuff, and there was such a buzz when the rumors about 50 Shades came up. The "squeaky clean" image didn't come about despite Emma acting contrary to it, it came about precisely because she made sure to uphold that impression of her in public.
  4. I can only speak for myself there, but direct statements from Emma can change my perceptions of her any time. Playing in certain movies, or not playing in them, can change my mind as well.
  5. She has always been interested in controlling her public image, though. One quote from the top of my head, you can have your first cigarette or your first glass of wine with friends at home or in public. The very fact that she tries to protect her privacy is testament to the fact that she does care about her image. Also, when she says things like she did at the MTV awards, it's obvious she still can't let go of her old image. If you are right and she was only talking about the past there, I'd be interested in hearing about the things that are going on right now in her life. Because, responsibi
  6. Emma doesn't need to validate my "opinion" that she's been acting contradictory, it's self-evident. What I was wondering about is her still reminding people that she was very much the nerd, if she wants to get away from that image. If we accept that Emma wasn't referring to the present with her MTV quote (and I still don't think that that's the correct interpretation), we don't have any statements from Emma about her current stance on education. What I trust in is the factual situation of Emma dividing her time between several pursuits.
  7. A day with new Amorphis is a good day. Dunno why metal bands are required to have mostly crappy videos though
  8. Adebisi has entered the thread, so the topic is now flamenco.
  9. Emma took quite a few breaks from her studies. That's not my opinion, it's a fact. It's also fact that Emma used to mention education being a top priority (just remember the one speech, may have been at BAFTA, where she explained Dan's absence by saying he got his priorities right). Speculating about her reasons for this is subjective, but that doesn't mean I'm fabricating things. I think we can agree that when you say one thing, but do another, that's hypocritical. This may not be 100% the case here because she actually did do something for Uni (I assume), but the gap between her statement
  10. Point out the sarcasm or malice in the post above. You weren't asking for evidence, you were asking for Emma quotes, as if they alone had the magical quality to prove i.e. her current stance on education.
  11. There's no derailing if there's nothing to discuss. Choose to post what you think is relevant, and ignore what you think is not. It's easy. Uhm, no. The points that were brought up by me and Jonny in this topic have not been discussed in other threads, yet the response was outrage and denial. I could print out the last few pages and call it "how to unquestioningly defend Emma's honor with strawman arguments", by Roberto.
  12. I'm kind of bummed out about people telling me not to be sarcastic. For the most part there's nothing sarcastic about this thread, it's about Emma's education.
  13. Hmm... Joanne, well-brought-up daughter to an affluent family, but mentally unstable due to the pressures of this milieu and numerous failures at life, roams the streets of [X], gathering followers among the disillusioned and hopeless while sliding ever deeper into bouts of depression interrupted by seizures of religious fanaticism and phantasmagoria. Anyways, it all ends in glorious bloodshed. I'd watch dat shit. This may or may not have been inspired by Brecht.
  14. She'd need to put on some mass for that. Which would look weird. Unless we're actually talking about an artsy play or something.
  15. Most of the "unreality" on German TV is made up of fake court cases and fake stories of troublesome teens. And that makes up probably 40% of all programmes*. *number pulled out of my ass, but it is a lot.
  16. And if we can believe Emma, she has buried the topic for good ("who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey? Seriously?"). So that's one big bullet point off the "juicy issues" list.
  17. And pigs may fly. "So, waddup? Still the face of [enter make-up brand]? Still with Will? Still a contender for MTV's Best Kiss?" Juice. There is none.
  18. I doubt v. much that the "rolemodel" faction doesn't care about her uni time. "Juicier" topics than that on the horizon right now, with Emma? I can't see any.
  19. I don't think Emma needs more protection than anyone else, and no one knows what she will talk about in the months to come. At least, when she finishes her last term (wether she gets a degree or not, and wether she graduates with honors or not), I'm p. sure journalists will ask her about her studies, regardless of the wishes of her PR people. But Emma is accustomed to that kind of stuff, it's not like she hasn't grown up with it.
  20. is school a private matter? I don't think so. I'd count it as work. When people talk about school, I don't get terribly excited. It's simply an update on where they are heading, professionally.
  21. Welp, receiving an award is a good occasion to give some hints of what's currently going on with your life. Interviews, too. It's actually the reason why I'm reading them.
  22. Here is what I think happened: At her private boarding school, Emma was one of the best, if not the best, student in her class ("I'm mostly in the A category", Letterman). At Brown, and later at Oxford, I would venture a guess that this wasn't the case anymore (like she said in a recent interview, at uni, she met people who were a lot smarter than her - I might search the link just for you, Roberto ). Now, with Emma being a self-confessed perfectionist (we all remember "I have a mild case of OCD!"), this probably made studying less exciting/ rewarding than it used to be. OTOH, acting in big
  23. Welp, I would add that I personally would expect Emma to graduate with honors, if she really put in the time. "If I know I could get that A or an A+ then I have to get that A or A+". That's a genuine Emma quote for you.
  24. It's also almost like people who really have grown don't actually tiptoe around this fact; if Emma has come to realize that studying all the time is a waste of time, and you should spend more time with friends, having fun and doing art, it's almost like one would expect her to simply say that. Crazy right?
