Mr. Pumpkinhead
What's the legacy of Harry Potter? Did the Harry Potter series help to bring a generation of young people and even older people back to reading? Do you read more books today because of the Harry Potter series? Will the books or movies better stand the test of time and will the movies ever be remade? If you have children or grandchildren one day or have them now, do you intend on reading the Harry Potter series to/with them? Would you show them the movies? Did you take anything away from the books/movies other than the entertainment value or them? How has the series inspired you? Do you aspire to write books because of the series or direct/produce movies? Has the series inspired you to teach children or teach creative writing? Did the series teach you self confidence or affect your attitude or personal interactions with others in any way? Now that we are distanced temporally a bit from the movies and even more so from the books how often and in what way do they continue to resonate with you? Is there little or no lasting legacy to the Harry Potter series? Was is simply a product of it's time that will get lost in our ever-increasingly fast paced society where we are more concerned with the next new thing, the next fad, the next movement or technology? Sacred_Path
HP definitely brought me back to reading, though maybe not in the conventional sense. Since my youth most of the books I read were dry, non-fiction books on my hobbies, history and archaeology. Over the years, the time I spent on reading books became smaller and smaller. With HP, I basically re-discovered reading lighter books for fun. I don't know if that qualifies as the legacy of HP though. I think HP resonates most with the people who were caught up in it "while it lasted", that is, while books and/ or movies were still coming out. I doubt it will enjoy the same longevity as, say, LOTR. The distinctly 19th century world and the focus on teens that don't really come across as teens very often makes it less evocative than Tolkien's grand themes. OTOH, for those who are still into it, it seems to be very close to their heart. Maybe that'll help with keeping HP alive for new generations of readers.
trixie
Well, I read books before I started reading Harry Potter so the series didn't get me into reading, but Harry Potter still brought me something much more than any other book/s did. like it was a part of my sparetime and It was this fanbase, the websites, the fanfiction, going down to a a bookstore in the middle of the night, listening to radio podcast to find out clues, etc that made Harry Potter so special. I would no doubt read the books to my kids/grandchildren and watch the movies with them. And I think most fans that shared this experience will do the same.So I thinkthe next generations will know what HP is but I doubt it will mean the same thing for them as for The HP generation. lol Harry Potter is no LOTR, I agree. In fact in fantasy nothing can ever beat Tolkien. Tolkien's work is a timeless classic. Edited April 23, 2013 by trixie
Emma_Rules
yes, i quite believe the books will stand the test of time, and the films are already iconic in the realm of cinema.
soulsister
JKR's books will be iconic like Lord of the Rings and The Wizard of Oz. They all contain analogies of the real world we live in---good vs evil, love vs hate. And in the end-- good and love always overcomehate and evil. Its lessons are always contained in children's books, which will shape future generations.

Badab
Let´s start with the oblivious: Harry Potter brought us, Some Museums, some Parks, A group of new rising British stars oh and of course a really really rich women, named J.K. Rowling^^ Also it gave us new good night stories for young and old. Stories simpel enough that the young ones can read them and complex enough that the old ones have there fun, too.and maybe that is the trick that will keep them well read in the 21th century. But that is of course just a guess, who might know what the future brings.
