Roberto
Interesting behind the scenes info from THR: Teller was holding out for more money and his deal never closed. One source says the CAA-repped actor balked at a $4 million offer, and as negotiations lagged, Teller's window of availability began to close (he would have needed to train as a pianist for weeks before the August 2015 shoot began but instead shot Allegiant, the third film in the Divergent franchise, which has now been jettisoned to TV by Lionsgate for its fourth and final installment). As for why Watson fell out, sources say money wasn't a factor (after all, the actress made eight figures for the Harry Potter franchise). But she waffled over the time commitment and instead opted to do the live-action Beauty and the Beast for Disney. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/rambling-reporter/oops-you-wouldnt-believe-a-931138
Roberto
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/01/movies/la-la-land-oscar-race.html Ms. Watson fell out first, according to three people briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations. Tackling “La La Land†would have made it difficult, if not impossible, for her to take a role she had long coveted: Belle in Disney’s live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast.†The film, commitments for which would overlap with “La La Land,†had the extra benefit of filming in Ms. Watson’s home base of London; she could remain close to her boyfriend at the time, a star rugby player for Oxford University. Mr. Chazelle and Ms. Watson parted on good terms. “Beauty and the Beast†will arrive on March 17. While not conceived as an awards contender, the film is expected to be a box office hit. Mr. Teller did not leave on his own accord. According to the people briefed on negotiations, he was first upset with the money Lionsgate was offering, a fee of about $1 million, and was even more irritated to learn that Ms. Stone — in a turnaround of Hollywood’s gender pay gap — was being offered closer to $3 million. Lionsgate, which declined to comment, agreed to raise its offer a bit. But then came scheduling difficulties. Mr. Chazelle, who also declined to comment, cut Mr. Teller loose and went with Mr. Gosling, who had become available. (Mr. Teller, not known for his quiet demeanor, told Esquire magazine in August that he had responded by sending Mr. Chazelle a profane text message.)
Ashley
Seems like this film is winning a lot of awards. Would have loved to see Emma in a film like this but I'm happy she did Beauty and the Beast. I mean I would have skipped this for it too lol

Roberto
At one point, Miles Teller and Emma Watson were linked to play the lead roles. Did you meet with them? I was looking forward to meeting Miles. Emma [Watson], I spent some days in the studio doing preparatory work on her voice. We had “City of Stars†written at that point. We decided to leave it lyrically neutral so she sang “la de da†[to the melody of “City of Starsâ€]. It was very early in the process. She came in, we had fun, and I liked her enormously. I’m sure I’ll get to work with her another time. How did her singing hold up? We would have got her there, for sure. She went on to do Beauty and the Beast and I’ve heard great reports of what she’s achieved there. In fact, I did her first two or three demos for Beauty and the Beast in my studio. She was doing this exploratory work for La La Land and said, “There’s this other thing I want to try out for.†I did a couple of Beauty and the Beast songs for her and all of a sudden she was working on that. I had a very early hand in that. I’m looking forward to seeing it. http://www.newsweek.com/inside-musical-magic-la-la-land-music-director-marius-de-vries-538510
