Monkey Cartwheels
Howdy people. How many people have done it? Who would consider it? Within the next year or two I plan on going for a month or two to America (I plan to be living there in around 3 years). But seeing as its such a huge place with so many things to see I'm pretty keen just to go there and find stuff as I see it. So, would you?

Monkey Cartwheels
Do you think it was better than a planned trip?
Azure_Skies91
I would love to travel somewhere outside of my country without plans. Haha probably England!
The Midnight Q
It has its perks. One good thing is that the places you'll go and the things you'll see are unexpected. The bad thing is that the places you'll go and the things you'll see are unexpected. Like you said, the United States is a huge place and much of it can get pretty bland... (of course depends on where you go) Something I'd suggest doing is have a cross-country road trip, you're pretty much just going where the road takes you. I've done it loads of times and I quite like it, just make sure you travel with a friend or two lol. As far as scenery is concerned just driving through Montana, west Texas, Arizona, California coastline and along the Rockies are well worth a trip on their own. Gorgeous Word of advice however, if you don't make solid plans at least make any plans a day or two before going somewhere. That way you'll know where you should avoid, where to find some money, food, lodging, etc. Edited January 4, 2012 by sirbenedictvs
Arie
I've done it a few times. When I was younger I used to runaway a lot. This preTTY. Uch meant I would buy a plane ticket to wherever was cheep or just get in my car and drive. I usually ended up someplace where I had family or friends, but these were never planned. Some were tons of fun, come not so much. I often just feel the need to get away.
4ever_watsonian&westlifer
tried it too but with friends...much more fun than the planned ones..just make sure you have your purpose of going there intact..and always stay out of trouble! Just enjoy!!
Karen
I'd say plan a little, like to get lodgings and stuff. America isn't so big on hostels, so you'll need to look into cheap hotels or motels. that's the most important thing, I think.
red
Everytime I read the title of the thread i read "traveling without PANTS" instead of plans. Well, on topic: I havent done either.

ling
I like to plan a bit. Ex: when I was in the UK, I had plane tickets (obviously) and hotels booked in London and Newcastle.. but beyond that I didn't have too much of a set schedule. My friends knew where I would be and we penciled in times to meet, but didn't even make specific plans among ourselves until we'd met up. It was good because I'd just wake up every morning, walk the half a block to the Tube, pick a place that I recognized from a book or a movie and go to it. As long as I had my Oyster card and my tube map I felt perfectly safe, but still got a chance to explore on my own.
Emma_Rules
i have done it once, last year in fact. i had gone to visit my Mom near Davenport, Iowa, during July between two temp jobs in which i had some time off between. i saw this coffee-table picture book of the Grand Canyon, at my Mom's house, that she had bought when she was there about ten years previously. a few days later, i am driving west on Route 70, went to Denver, Colorado, then Grande Junction, through Utah deserts, down Route 15 to Las Vegas, wasted some money at the MGM Grande Casino, took some pictures of hookers and gaudy neon lights lol. stayed overnight, then drove to the Hoover Dam on the Arizona side, wow, dam was huge and you could drive across it. then i travelled about a hundred miles to the Grand Canyon. holy cricket, it was worth the drive, every tedious mile, every cent spent on gas, you have to see to believe it! i stayed several days, then drove back to Virginia on Route 40. totally unplanned trip and best vacation i have ever been on, went through 18 states of the US on that trip, and have now been to 41 states of the USA, and 36 countries in my US Navy years.
